چکیده

1. Abstract The aim of the research is to develop a new therapy for the relief of phantom limb pain (PLP) using a virtual reality environment. PLP is pain which is felt in a limb which is missing through amputation. The therapy will be derived from an existing therapy which uses a system of mirrors to mirror an existing limb in such a way that it appears that the amputated limb is still there. The main focus of the research is to emulate the existing mirror technique using an immersive virtual reality environment then to extend and develop the technique such that it can be deployed as part of a therapy to aid the rehabilitation of sufferers of PLP. The research involves developing a technique for projecting a virtual representation of a subject into a virtual environment using a HeadMounted Display (HMD) and using this to project movement into the virtual environment which mirrors the tracking of a good limb. Once established this mechanism will be used to investigate the nature of synaesthesia, sensation triggered by stimulation which is normally associated with a different sensation, or cortical reorganisation. The final aim is to develop a method for analysing signals generated by electromyography, a means of collecting nerve impulses from surfacemounted sensors, to determine and project intended movement directly to the virtual limb and provide the basis for a preliminary study which will establish the practicability of rehabilitation of subjects experiencing PLP using this technique.

Immersive Virtual Reality as a Rehabilitative Technology for Phantom Limb Experience: A Protocol

This paper describes a study protocol to investigate the use of immersive virtual reality as a treatment for amputees' phantom limb pain. This work builds upon prior research using mirror box therapy to induce vivid sensations of movement originating from the muscles and joints of amputees' phantom limbs. The present project transposes movements of amputees' anatomical limbs into movements of a...

Immersive Low-Cost Virtual Reality Treatment for Phantom Limb Pain: Evidence from Two Cases

Up to 90% of amputees experience sensations in their phantom limb, often including strong, persistent phantom limb pain (PLP). Standard treatments do not provide relief for the majority of people who experience PLP, but virtual reality (VR) has shown promise. This study provides additional evidence that game-like training with low-cost immersive VR activities can reduce PLP in lower-limb ampute...

Virtual arm for the phantom pain therapy

Phantom limb pain appears where an amputated limb used to be and is often excruciating and almost impossible to treat. Recently, two experiments on hand amputees in the neuroscience area have shown that if a patient has the visual illusion of his phantom hand in a way that he is able to move it, the phantom pain can decrease. We propose a new augmented reality system aiming to experiment this i...

Investigating the efficacy of a virtual mirror box in treating phantom limb pain in a sample of chronic sufferers

This paper describes a pilot study to evaluate the efficacy of using immersive virtual reality (IVR) to treat phantom limb pain. This work builds upon prior research using a mirror box (in which the amputee sees a mirror image of their remaining anatomical limb in the phenomenal space of their amputated limb) to induce vivid sensations of movement originating from the muscles and joints of thei...
